Today’s Spanglish word of the day is marketa (sometimes spelled marqueta).

I know, the word sounds and looks foolish, but you have to admit, it has a catchy sound to it. Enough people use this word that some even decided to include it in their business name. This word’s meaning is so obvious that even a first grader could tell you what it is, and chances are he/she would tell you they sell grocerías there  Regardless of its simplicity, it’s still a Spanglish word.

Lets look at some examples:

“I went to the marketa and bought all the ingredients on the recipe list to make some bomb lonche.”

“Cris se cree mejor que nosotros porque hace sus compras en la marketa y no en la pulga.”

The proper Spanish translation for the English word “market” and the Spanglish word “marketa” is mercado.

“I’m sorry Timmy, we’re in Mexico and there’s no Walmart, only a mercado.”
